1. ELL ACCOMODATIONS: http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Learning+with+personal+media+players:+iPods+and+handheld+computers...-a0164158230 This website showcases some ideas for incorporating iPods with an ELL student. I have an ELL student in my classroom and spoke with our district ELL teacher about some of these ideas. She is actually going to use some budget money next year for some MP3s (cheaper than iPods) to utilize some of these ideas. I especially liked the idea of the iPod traveling home with the student to encourage communication and connection with the family as well.
2. JOURNAL PROMPTS: http://onetrip.org/apps/desktop.php?quip This site provides a quote for every day of the year. I frequently assign a journal prompt for my students to respond to at the beginning of Writing. I usually offer 2-3 choices with a free choice option. I have never had students respond to a quote though. With an iPod I could send the students to a date to respond to an appropriate quote. Aside from responding to the quote, students would gain valuable inferencing skills by figuring out what the quote means and discussing different possible interpretations. Students would also gain valuable practice providing support for their opinion.
3. SPECIAL EDUCATION ACCOMODATIONS: http://homepage.mac.com/lmelem/websites/iMovieTheater21.html This site offered a way to use iPods for special education. Students who have trouble reading are given accomodations which allow the teachers to read the test to them. By recording the test questions for use on an iPod, students and teachers can focus on understanding the questions rather than the reading. I was additionally impressed because the students could rewind and replay the questions as often as they needed to; freeing up valuable teacher time as well as allowing the student to take the time they need to complete the test. Lastly, the earbuds allow students to take the assessment undistracted and prevents the rest of the room from being distracted too.
4. GUIDED READING LESSONS: http://web4j1.lane.edu/wallace/read-buddies.html I really liked the idea on this site. The teacher recorded a guided reading lesson with the story and then included an iPod Shuffle, the book and an extension worksheet. Students in primary grades bring a book home every night to reinforce the reading skills taught in class. Many students do not have the home support to provide the additional teaching the iPod Shuffle provided (20-30 minutes). The site shows a sample of the recording as well as the growth in student reading progress.
5. USING IPODS FOR A SOCIAL STUDIES PROJECT: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/10/18/AR2005101801670.html
This site provided an overview of how teachers can successfully use iPods for a large Social Studies project in fifth grade. We currently assign a large research project to our students in which they learn to research an American who made a difference in our history and write a paper about it. After the papers are completed, the students create a slideshow in Media Blender. I think the ideas presented in this article would be a good way to change up this project to try something new next year.
6. IPODS IN MATH CLASS: http://nlcommunities.com/communities/favazza/archive/2009/02/14/209646.aspx The idea presented in this site was to download videos from United Streaming/Discovery Education to help students understand complex math processes. Since I currently show videos from this site for math class currently, I thought it would be great to allow students to use this to replay the steps they need. I think the videos do a great job of helping visual learners but this would differentiate the reteaching for each student when and if they need it.
7. IPODS FOR MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES: http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/education/stories/110507dnmetgpipods.2f9eabc.html This site showcases a teacher singing a song to help musical learners learn the states of matter. Although, creating songs and singing is not exactly my strength, I think it would be good to download educational songs to help students learn different subject matter.
8. IPODS AND AUDIOBOOKS: http://www.slideshare.net/gpoli/a-classroom-in-your-pocket-ipods-in-education I would love to use iPods to download audiobooks for my students. Last year, my coteachers and I spent hundreds of dollars on books and those books will probably only last two years. Looking at this website, it is easy to see how much money we would save if we purchased audiobooks instead. Currently, most of our students own some variety of an MP3 player. I would love to do a cost analysis comparison of the purchase of iPods/MP3s and audiobooks vs. what we currently pay to maintain our grade level and school-wide libraries.
9. PODCASTING PROJECT IDEAS: http://www.teachingideas.co.uk/ict/podcasting.htm This site contains a lot podcasting project ideas for the classroom. It would be hard not to find an idea on this site that would work for your classroom. I especially liked the school news idea as our school currently does broadcast announcements on a closed circuit television - it would be fun to broadcast the announcements as a podcast instead.
10. MORE IPOD PROJECT IDEAS: http://www.schoolcio.com/ShowArticle/1014 This site contains a few other ideas (no details though) of how to incorporate iPods in the classroom. I like it because it listed some justifications and explanations that might come up when writing a grant or trying to talk your principal our technology coordinator into purchasing a set for your class.
